Michael Johnson is a legendary American sprinter. A sprinter is an athlete who competes in very short, high-speed races. Johnson is widely considered one of the most consistent sprinters in the history of track and field. Over his career, he won four Olympic gold medals. He also earned eight gold medals at the World Championships. He held several world records for the 200 meters and the 400 meters. He also held the world record for the indoor 400 meters and the 300 meters.

Johnson utilized a very unique running technique. Most elite sprinters use a high knee lift to generate power and speed. Johnson defied this conventional wisdom. He ran with a distinctive, stiff, upright position. He also used very short steps to move down the track. Despite this unusual style, he achieved incredible speed. His method proved that different body mechanics could still produce world-class results. This unique approach became a hallmark of his legendary career.

His career was marked by incredible milestones and specific achievements. In 1991, he won his first world title in Tokyo. In 1992, he faced a setback when food poisoning in Spain caused him to lose weight and strength. Even so, he won a gold medal in the 4x400 meter relay. In 1995, he achieved a rare "double" by winning both the 200 and 400 meters at the World Championships. He even added a third title in the relay to make it a "triple." No other elite male athlete had accomplished this in a major 20th-century meet.

The 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta served as his most famous moment. During the U.S. Olympic Trials, he broke Pietro Mennea's 200-meter record. This record had stood for nearly 17 years. At the Atlanta Games, Johnson earned the nickname "The Man With the Golden Shoes." He wore custom gold-colored Nike racing spikes made of a material called Zytel. Interestingly, his shoes were different sizes. His left shoe was a US size 10.5, while his right was a size 11. This was because his right foot was longer.

Johnson's performance in Atlanta was statistically staggering. He won the 400-meter Olympic title with a record time of 43.49 seconds. In the 200-meter final, he ran a world-record time of 19.32 seconds. This was the largest improvement ever recorded on a 200-meter world record. He also became the only male athlete to win both the 200 and 400 meters at the same Olympics. His dominance was reflected in his long-term statistics. As of July 2024, he holds 22 of the top 100 times for the 400 meters. He also holds nine of the top 25 times for that distance.

Johnson continued to compete successfully even as he aged. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he won his fourth gold medal in the 400 meters. At age 33, he became the oldest Olympic gold medalist in track events shorter than 5000 meters. He also set a new world record for the 400 meters in 1999 with a time of 43.18 seconds. This record stood for nearly 17 years before it was finally broken in 2016. His ability to remain at the top of his sport for over a decade is quite rare.

Later in his career, Johnson faced difficult situations regarding sportsmanship. Some of his relay teammates were found to have used banned performance-enhancing drugs. This led to the loss of certain relay titles. Johnson felt betrayed by these actions. Because of this, he chose to return his own Olympic relay gold medal. He wanted to maintain his personal integrity. This period of his life showed the complex side of professional competitive sports.

Since retiring from competition in 2001, Johnson has stayed connected to athletics. He has worked as a prominent television commentator and pundit. He has been a regular part of the BBC's coverage for many major events. This includes the Olympic Games in Athens, Beijing, London, Rio, Tokyo, and Paris. He also covers the Commonwealth Games. His transition from athlete to expert helps fans understand the technical details of track and field. He remains a vital figure in the global sports community.
