Methoxychlor

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

People once used a chemical called methoxychlor. It was an insecticide. This is a substance used to kill insects. It helped protect crops and pets from bugs. It could kill mosquitoes and cockroaches. People used it to replace an older chemical called DDT.

But methoxychlor can be harmful. It is a PBT chemical. This means it is toxic and stays in the environment for a long time. It does not dissolve well in water. Instead, it settles in the ground or in water. It can stay there for many months.

Living things can eat it. This causes it to move up the food chain. It can also act as an endocrine disruptor. This means it interferes with how a body works. In animals, it can harm how they grow or make babies. It can also hurt the liver or the heart.

Because of these risks, many places banned it. The European Union banned it in 2002. The United States banned it in 2003. Now, we must be careful to wash our food.
