DEET is a common ingredient in bug sprays.

It is a clear or yellow oil. People put it on their skin or clothes. It helps stop many pests. It keeps away mosquitoes and biting flies. It also stops ticks, fleas, and leeches.

Scientists think DEET works in a few ways. One idea is that it has a bad smell to bugs. This is called the "smell and avoid" idea. Another idea is that the smell confuses them. This is called the "bewilderment" idea. It might also hide our scent. This makes it harder for bugs to find us. Some bugs also stay away if they touch it with their legs.

DEET can be used in different strengths. Some sprays have 10% DEET. Others have nearly 100%. Using more DEET can make it last longer. But using more than 50% does not add more time. Be careful with clothes. DEET can melt some plastics and fabrics. It can even damage nail polish. Always follow the rules on the bottle to stay safe.
