DEET is a very common ingredient found in many insect repellents.

Its full name is N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide. It is a liquid that looks clear or slightly yellow. People apply this oil to their skin or their clothing. It helps protect people from many different pests. It works against mosquitoes, biting flies, ticks, and fleas. It can even keep away chiggers and leeches. This makes it a very important tool for staying safe outdoors.

Scientists have a few ideas about how DEET works. One idea is called the "smell and avoid" hypothesis. This suggests that DEET has a bad smell to insects. Another idea is the "bewilderment" hypothesis. This means the smell might confuse the insects. It might also mask humans by hiding our natural scents. Some bugs might also stay away if they touch DEET with the hairs on their legs. The exact way it works is still being studied by researchers.

DEET has a long history of use. It was first developed in 1944 by Samuel Gertler. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture. The United States Army needed it during World War II. Soldiers used it during jungle warfare in places like Vietnam. At first, soldiers used a mixture called "bug juice." This was 75% DEET mixed with 25% ethanol. Later, scientists made a new version that lasts longer. This newer version was registered by the EPA in 1991.

There are many different strengths of DEET available. Some products have less than 10% DEET in them. Others can have nearly 100% DEET. Using a higher amount can help the protection last for more hours. However, using more than 50% does not make the protection last any longer. The CDC recommends using 30% to 50% DEET to prevent diseases. In the United Kingdom, the NHS suggests 50% for people visiting areas with malaria. You should not use DEET on children younger than 2 months old.

While DEET is helpful, you must use it carefully. It is a solvent, which means it can dissolve certain things. It might damage some plastics, watch crystals, or nail polish. It can also melt synthetic fabrics like rayon or spandex. If you use sunscreen, wait 30 minutes before applying DEET. This is because DEET can make sunscreen less effective. Always wash the repellent off when you no longer need it. Following these simple steps helps keep you safe and healthy.
