A mosquito net is a special kind of mesh curtain.

It drapes over a bed or a sleeping area to create a safe space. This net acts as a barrier against biting insects like mosquitoes and flies. These bugs can carry many different diseases. Some examples are malaria, dengue fever, and the Zika virus.

By keeping bugs away, the net helps stop people from getting sick. It is a very important tool for health in many parts of the world.

To work well, the net must be made very carefully. The mesh must have tiny holes. These holes must be small enough to stop even the smallest insect. However, the holes must also be large enough to let fresh air move through. This is called ventilation. If the holes are too small, the sleeper might get too hot.

Some nets are made of white cotton or synthetic thread. A white net is helpful because it lets you see a mosquito against the light background. This makes it easier to spot a bug before it bites.

People have used mosquito nets for a very long time. Some records show that people used nets in ancient Egypt. It is even said that Cleopatra slept under one.

In ancient Greece, these curtains were called conopeum. This name actually gave us the English word "canopy." In Rome, they were called cubiculare. Other cultures, like those in India, have used nets for ritual worship since the late medieval period. These nets have been a part of human history for many centuries.

Today, many nets are treated with a special medicine called an insecticide. These are known as insecticide-treated nets, or ITNs.

The medicine can kill or scare away mosquitoes that touch the net. This makes the net much more effective at preventing malaria. A study from the Malaria Atlas Project looked at data from the years 2000 to 2024. It found that these treated nets were responsible for about 72% of all malaria cases prevented in Africa. This is a huge number that shows how much these nets help save lives.

Nets can be used in many different ways to keep people safe. You can hang them from a ceiling or use a box-shaped frame. Some nets are even built directly into tents.

It is important to seal the net properly so bugs cannot squeeze through the gaps. The net should also not touch your skin while you sleep. If the net touches you, a mosquito might still be able to bite you through the mesh. Using nets correctly is a simple way to stay healthy and protected.
