Lindane is a chemical used for many jobs. People used it to kill bugs on food plants. It was also used as a medicine for lice and scabies.

Scientists first made a similar chemical in 1825. Later, a chemist named Teunis van der Linden described lindane in 1912. During World War II, people needed it for farming. It helped grow more oats and wheat.

But lindane can be very dangerous. It is a neurotoxin. This means it can hurt the nervous system. It can cause headaches, dizziness, or even seizures. It may also cause cancer. Because of these risks, many countries banned its use on farms.

Lindane is also a persistent organic pollutant. This means it stays in nature for a long time. It can travel far away through the air and water.

Doctors can still use lindane as a second-line treatment. This means they only use it if other medicines do not work. In the United States, the FDA requires a black box warning on these products. This warning tells people about the serious risks.
