This smell is part of why gasoline smells the way it does. Benzene is a hydrocarbon. This means it is made of only carbon and hydrogen. It is found in petroleum.

A benzene molecule is shaped like a flat ring. It has six carbon atoms. These atoms form a hexagon shape. Six hydrogen atoms join the ring.

For a long time, scientists did not know this shape. In 1865, a chemist named Friedrich August Kekulé suggested the ring. He said the ring had single and double bonds. He even said he saw a snake biting its own tail in a dream! Later, Kathleen Lonsdale used X-rays to prove the ring was flat.

People use benzene to make many other chemicals. But benzene can be harmful. It is a carcinogen, which means it can cause cancer. It can lead to leukemia, a type of blood sickness. Because of this, it is not used in many items we buy.
