Lindane is a chemical used for many different jobs. It belongs to a group called organochlorines. For a long time, people used it as an insecticide to protect crops. It was also used as a medicine for people with lice or scabies.

Because it is a neurotoxin, it can affect the nervous system. This means it can interfere with how the body sends signals. It can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, or even seizures. It may also cause harm to the liver and kidneys.

This chemical works by interfering with a specific part of the body. It affects a messenger in the brain called GABA. Lindane interacts with a part of the brain called the GABAA receptor-chloride channel complex. It does this by binding to a site known as the picrotoxin binding site.

This action disrupts the normal way the nervous system functions. In the environment, lindane is a persistent organic pollutant. This means it stays in nature for a very long time. It can travel long distances through the air and water.

Scientists have studied these chemicals for a long time. A scientist named Faraday first synthesized a similar chemical in 1825. Later, a Dutch chemist named Teunis van der Linden described lindane in 1912. During World War II, researchers in the United Kingdom needed new ways to protect food. They found that lindane helped protect oats and wheat from pests.

In 1949, a product called Mergamma A was launched. This product contained 20% lindane and 1% mercury.

Many facts show how much lindane was used globally. Between 1950 and 2000, about 600,000 tonnes of lindane were produced. Most of this was used for farming in many different countries. This included the United States, China, and Brazil.

By November 2006, 52 countries had banned its use. In 2009, an international ban on farming use began under the Stockholm Convention. However, some countries still allow it for medical use.

You might recognize lindane from how it is used today. It is mostly used as a "second-line" medicine. This means doctors only use it if other treatments fail.

In the United States, the FDA requires a "black box warning" on these products. This is a very serious warning about the risks. It tells people not to use it on infants or people with certain health issues.

This helps keep people safe while using the medicine.
