DDT is a special chemical used to kill insects.

It is a colorless and tasteless substance that does not have much smell. Scientists call it an organochloride. It was once used all over the world to help farmers and protect people. However, it became very famous because it also had big impacts on nature. Today, it is a very controversial tool. This means people have strong, different ideas about whether it should be used.

This chemical works by attacking the nerves of an insect.

Inside an insect, DDT opens tiny channels in the nerve cells. These channels are meant to control sodium ions. When they stay open, the nerves fire off signals all at once. This causes the insect to have spasms and eventually die. Some insects can even learn to survive it. They do this through mutations or by using enzymes to break the chemical down.

People have been studying this chemical for a long time. An Austrian chemist named Othmar Zeidler first made it in 1874. Later, a Swiss scientist named Paul Hermann Müller discovered it could kill insects in 1939.

Because his discovery was so helpful, he won the Nobel Prize in 1948. During World War II, it was used to stop diseases like malaria and typhus. It was very important for protecting soldiers in tropical areas.

There are many important numbers to know about DDT.

Between 1950 and 1980, farmers used more than 40,000 tonnes of it every year. In the United States, production peaked in 1963 at 82,000 tonnes per year. Before it was banned in the US in 1972, people had applied over 600,000 tonnes. Now, China has stopped making it, and India is the largest producer. In 2009, about 3,314 tonnes were made for health reasons.

We can see how DDT links to our modern world and health.

A book called Silent Spring by Rachel Carson helped people see the environmental harm. This led to many countries making strict rules for its use. Now, the World Health Organization allows limited use to fight malaria.

It is one tool used to fight a huge health challenge. We must balance helping people with keeping the Earth safe.
