Media monitoring

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Media monitoring is a way to track what people say in the news. It involves watching many different types of media. This includes print papers, online sites, and TV or radio broadcasts. People also monitor social media to see what is being shared. Organizations use this to see how others see them. It helps them respond to new trends or public opinions.

This work happens in a few different ways. First, people look for specific keywords. A keyword might be a company name or a special topic. Every time that word appears, it is called a clipping. These clippings are often shown in a long feed. Companies might use a special service to get these updates. Some businesses even hire marketing agencies to do this work.

Scientists and experts use these tools for many reasons. In business, they use something called buzz monitoring. This tracks blogs and social networks to see how people feel about a product. Social scientists use it to study news from around the world. They look for bias in how stories are told. Computer scientists also use it to visualize the media system. They can even study the sentiment or feelings in news content.

There are many important facts about how this works. In 2007, researchers studied sentiment in news and blogs in Denver. In 2009, others looked at network validation in Bled, Slovenia. Media monitoring was very useful in 2021 during the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Social scientists studied posts on social media to understand vaccine opinions. They looked at likes, comments, and retweets to see what people agreed with. This helped them capture many complex opinions from the internet.

Technology makes this big job much easier to do. Machines use high-speed scanners to read text very quickly. They also use audio and video recording tools. Some systems use machine learning to help automate the work. This means computers learn from data to index information. They can search sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit very fast. This allows users to find brands and opinions in a simple way.
