Advocacy groups are organized people who work to change things. They are also called interest groups or lobby groups. These groups want to change public opinion or new laws. They might care about money, religion, or doing what is good for everyone. Some groups have a lot of money and power. Other groups have very few resources to help them. They use many different tools to reach their goals. Some use media campaigns or research to show their ideas. Others use public stunts or polls to get attention.

Other groups, called lobby groups, try to change a law. They might talk to leaders to ask for a change. Some groups use legal defense funds to help people. History shows us how these groups started in Great Britain. In the mid-1700s, things were changing in England. A man named John Wilkes became a very famous leader. He was the editor of a paper called The North Briton. He attacked the government and its peace terms. This led to a large movement for more freedom. People even chanted "Wilkes and Liberty" in the streets. In 1769, a group called the Society for the Supporters of the Bill of Rights formed. They held large meetings and gave out many pamphlets.

Many important movements grew from these early ideas. In 1791, people started a sugar boycott to end slavery. This helped lead to a law in 1807. Later, the Chartists became a huge movement for workers. They used a document called the People's Charter in 1838. They wanted everyone to have the right to vote. In the United States, the Grand Army of the Republic was very strong. It was a group for Union Army veterans. It helped elect five presidents after the war.

Today, we see many different kinds of social movements. In the 20th century, Martin Luther King Jr. led the civil rights movement. After the wars, new groups appeared for many causes. Some groups fight for the environment or for peace. Others fight for women's rights or for the rights of many people. Some groups, like Greenpeace, have a lot of money. They use that money to lobby for the planet. We also see movements that work across the whole world. These groups show how people can join together to make a difference.
