They helped start a dark style of music known as black metal. This group has had a huge influence on many other musicians. They began in 1984 with three founding members. These were Øystein Aarseth, Jørn Stubberud, and Kjetil Manheim. They took their name from a song by the band Venom. The band spent their early years playing songs by other groups like Black Sabbath. Eventually, they began writing their own music to find a new sound.

The band became famous for very intense and strange live shows. In the late 1980s, a singer named Per Yngve Ohlin joined them. He used the stage name "Dead." He was the first black metal musician to use "corpse paint." This is a type of black and white makeup. He did not use it to look cool. Instead, he wanted to look like a real corpse.

He even buried his stage clothes to make them look old. These performances helped create a very dark atmosphere for their fans.

Many sad and difficult things happened to the band members. In 1991, Dead died by suicide in the house where the band lived. This event deeply affected the group. Later, in 1993, the guitarist Euronymous was killed by Varg Vikernes. Vikernes was a former bassist for Mayhem who played in a band called Burzum. This violence caused the band to stop playing for a while. They had even planned to blow up a cathedral to match their music. These events were very shocking to the music world.

Some members decided to reform the band in 1995. Jørn Stubberud, Jan Axel Blomberg, and Sven Erik Kristiansen all came back. They added new musicians like Rune Eriksen to the group.

Jan Axel Blomberg, also known as Hellhammer, has stayed with the band since 1988. The band has since had other members like Attila Csihar and Teloch. They began to try new things with their music after these changes. In 2007, they even won a Spellemann Award for their album Ordo Ad Chao.

Today, Mayhem is remembered as a pioneer of their musical style. Their early recordings, like the EP Deathcrush, are very important to fans. The first release of that EP was limited to only 1,000 copies. It sold out very quickly. Even though the band had a very hard history, they kept going. They show how music can be used to express very strong feelings. Their story is a big part of the history of heavy metal.
