Slayer is a famous American thrash metal band.

They formed in 1981 in Huntington Park, California. The original members were Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, Dave Lombardo, and Tom Araya. Their music is known for being very fast and aggressive. This style helped make them one of the "big four" thrash metal bands. This group also includes Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Many other musicians look up to Slayer for their musical ideas.

Making their music involves a lot of skill and teamwork. In the early days, King and Hanneman wrote most of the music. Araya, King, and Hanneman also wrote the lyrics. The band's logo has a special story too. Drummer Dave Lombardo designed it himself. He imagined how a person might carve it with a knife. Because he is left-handed, the logo looks slanted to the right.

Slayer's history began with playing songs by other bands at clubs. They played covers by groups like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. In 1983, a man named Brian Slagel heard them play. He invited them to record a song for a compilation album. This led to a recording contract with Metal Blade Records. The band had to pay for their first album themselves. They used savings from Araya and money from King's father.

Throughout their career, the band released many different projects. They released twelve studio albums and three live albums. Their third album, Reign in Blood, came out in 1986. It is known as one of the heaviest albums ever. This album was also their first to be certified gold in the U.S. The band has won two Grammy Awards for their songs. These wins were in 2007 and 2008.

Slayer's work often talks about very serious and difficult subjects. Their lyrics and art cover topics like war, religion, and racism. Because of these themes, some religious groups have criticized them. Some of their albums even faced bans or lawsuits. Despite this, they sold 5 million copies in the U.S. between 1991 and 2013. The band finished a farewell tour in 2019. They have since performed some reunion shows starting in 2024.
