They helped create the sound known as death metal. This style of music was very influential for other artists. Chuck Schuldiner led the group as the main songwriter. He played the guitar and was the primary singer. The band started in Altamonte Springs in 1983. At first, the group used the name Mantas. Schuldiner changed the name to Death later on. He wanted to turn a sad experience into something positive.

Making the music changed as the years went by. Early songs had a very raw and loud sound. The first two albums showed this early style. Later, the music became much more complex and technical. They began using tricky rhythms and new song structures. One famous album was called Human, released in 1991. This album was their best-selling record. It used progressive elements to change how the music felt. Many fans loved the more advanced way they played.

Schuldiner worked through many different stages of history. He moved between Florida and the San Francisco Bay Area. He even spent two weeks in Canada in 1986. He joined a Canadian band called Slaughter for a short time. The band had many different members over the years. Schuldiner was the only person who stayed through almost everything. He worked with many skilled musicians like drummer Chris Reifert. He also worked with drummer Gene Hoglan and guitarist Andy LaRocque.

Important records helped define the death metal genre. The first album was Scream Bloody Gore in 1987. Many people see it as a template for the music. Another key album was Leprosy, which came out in 1988. In 1989, they released Spiritual Healing in Tampa. This album added more melody to their sound. Schuldiner also moved away from certain lyrical themes. He began writing songs about social critique instead. The seventh album was The Sound of Perseverance in 1998. It was recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa.

Death left a lasting mark on the music world. The band ended in December 2001. This happened after Schuldiner died from glioma and pneumonia. He had been fighting brain cancer for some time. Even though the band stopped, their influence remains. Many modern metal bands still study their work. Former members have gone on to join other famous groups. Some musicians even joined shows like The Howard Stern Show. Their music continues to be a part of metal history.
