arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Misfits are an American punk rock band with a very unique sound. They are famous for starting a style called horror punk. This means they mix punk music with themes from scary movies. They often use spooky images, like a skull, for their art. This skull became their official logo for many years.

Their music has influenced many huge rock and metal bands. Groups like Metallica, Green Day, and My Chemical Romance all drew inspiration from them. People love the band for their intense energy and creative ideas.

Making the band's look was a big part of their art. Glenn Danzig wrote songs inspired by science fiction and B horror films. He often painted skeletal patterns on the clothes he wore to perform. Jerry Only used dark makeup around his eyes to look spooky. He also styled his hair into a long point called a devilock.

This hair style hung down from his forehead to his chin. These visual choices helped create the horror punk feeling.

The band began in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey. Glenn Danzig started the group after playing in local cover bands. He was the singer and the songwriter. Jerry Only joined him shortly after the start. They practiced in a garage with an electric piano. For a while, they did not even have a guitar player. They played their very first show at CBGB in New York City in April 1977.

The band's history has many different members and changes. Jerry Only is the only person who has been in the band the whole time. In 1982, they released the album Walk Among Us. This was their first full album released while the original group was active. Later, Doyle, who is Jerry's brother, joined on guitar. The band also released the album Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood in 1983. These albums were very important to the hardcore punk movement.

Even when the band stopped for a while, their name stayed important. After legal battles, Jerry and Doyle regained the rights to the Misfits name. They formed a new version of the band in 1995. This version had a sound that was closer to heavy metal. They released albums like American Psycho in 1997. Later, Jerry Only took over singing duties himself. He even toured for the band's 25th anniversary. The band continues to perform for fans today.
