Sir Matthew Bourne is a famous British choreographer. A choreographer is a person who creates dance moves for a show. He is well known for taking old stories and making them feel new. He uses ideas from movies, books, and musicals to inspire his work. His shows often look and feel like films. This makes his dance stories very easy to follow and exciting to watch.

Bourne has a very special way of making his dances. He does not just tell his dancers what to do. Instead, he uses a process called collaboration. This means he works closely with his team of dancers and designers. In the early stages of a show, he might give dancers specific tasks. They might create their own individual dance steps. These small movements eventually join together to form the full choreography. This helps the dancers feel part of the story.

Bourne's journey into dance started in London, England. He was born in Hackney on January 13, 1960. As a young boy, he loved watching shows in the West End. He even wrote letters to famous stars like Charlie Chaplin. He did not have formal ballet training when he was a child. Later, he studied at the Laban Centre and earned a degree in contemporary dance in 1985. He eventually started his own company called New Adventures.

Many of his shows have become very famous around the world. In 1995, he changed the classic ballet Swan Lake. In his version, the swans were all men wearing silk shorts. This version won a Laurence Olivier Award in 1996. He also made a version of Cinderella set in wartime London in 1997. Another popular show was based on the movie Edward Scissorhands in 2005. He even created a dance called The Car Man in the year 2000.

His work connects many different kinds of art together. He blends ballet with modern dance and musical theatre. He also uses big sets with billboard screens and live orchestras. This helps the audience feel like they are watching a movie on stage. Because he uses stories people already know, the impact is very strong. His unique style has changed how people think about dance. In 2016, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his services to dance.
