He was one of the best players in the world. During his career, he won 33 singles titles. He also won seven major titles. A major is a very large and important tournament. Wilander was ranked as the world number one for 20 weeks. He finished 1988 as the top player in the world.

Wilander was a star at a very young age. He won the French Open when he was only 17. This surprised many people in the tennis world. He was the youngest man to win four major titles. He was also known for being a very fair player. He once asked to replay a point because of a referee decision. Because of this, he won the Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy.

He was great on many different types of tennis courts. He won big matches on clay, grass, and hard courts. This is a very hard thing to do. Only a few men have won major titles on all three surfaces. In 1988, he won the Australian Open on hard courts. He had already won that tournament on grass courts before. This showed how skilled he was at every kind of game.

Wilander helped his country, Sweden, win many trophies too. He was a key part of the Swedish Davis Cup team. This is a competition where players play for their nations. Sweden reached seven straight finals from 1983 to 1989. Wilander helped Sweden win the cup in 1984, 1985, and 1987. He was a leader for his team during those successful years.

His tennis journey began in Växjö, Sweden. He first played professionally in Båstad, Sweden, in 1980. He played with a fiberglass racquet called the Rossignol F-200 Carbon. Wilander played professional tennis until he retired in 1996. In 2002, he was put into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. This is a special honor for the greatest players in history.
