Many people called him "Willy" during his long career. He was famous for being a master on clay courts. These are courts made of soft, red soil. Vilas won over 650 matches on these surfaces. This was an all-time record for his era. He helped make tennis very popular in Latin America. His success inspired many new players in his home country.

To play well, Vilas used a very special style. He was a left-handed player who stayed near the baseline. He hit the ball with heavy topspin. This makes the ball bounce very high and fast.

He even had a famous trick shot. It was called the "Gran Willy." This was a type of tweener shot. A tweener is when a player hits the ball between their legs. It is a very difficult and impressive move.

His most amazing year was 1977. During this season, he won 16 different singles titles.

He won two major tournaments called Grand Slams. These were the French Open and the US Open. He also had a massive winning streak on clay. He won 53 matches in a row on that surface. This was the longest streak of its kind at that time. In 2006, Rafael Nadal finally broke this long record.

There is a famous debate about his ranking. In 1977, many experts called him the world number one. However, the official ATP computer rankings put him at number two.

This happened because the ranking system used averages back then. A large study in 2015 suggested he should have been number one. A Netflix documentary called "Settling the Score" tells this story. Even though the debate continues, he remains a hero to many.

Throughout his career, Vilas showed great skill and strength. He won 62 singles titles and 16 doubles titles. He also won the Australian Open in 1978 and 1979. He worked very hard to learn how to play on grass.
