This city has worked as a center for trade for a long time. In ancient times, it sat at a junction where many caravan routes met. These paths connected the northern plains to central India and the west coast. Because of this, Mathura became a very important economic hub. Archaeologists have found many old things in the ground here. They found pottery and terracotta from the sixth century BCE. They also found remains of a large Buddhist complex and Jain sculptures.

The history of Mathura is full of many different rulers. It was once the capital of the Surasena Kingdom. Later, the Maurya empire ruled the area. The Kushan Empire also made Mathura one of its capitals. During the Kushan era, the city saw a golden age of art. This was known as the Mathura school of art.

Mathura has faced many difficult times throughout its past. In 1018 CE, the city was sacked by Mahmud of Ghazni. Many of its temples were destroyed during various invasions. Later, the ruler Sikandar Lodi also attacked the city. He was known as the 'Destroyer of Idols' because of his actions. Even so, many important sites were rebuilt over the years. For example, a Rajput ruler rebuilt the Keshavadeva temple. He spent thirty-three lakh rupees to make it a wonder of the age. The city has always found ways to rebuild and continue.

Today, Mathura is a major part of the Krishna circuit. This circuit includes places like Vrindavan, Barsana, and Govardhan. It is also a key part of India's heritage. The government has chosen it for a special project to develop heritage cities. In the 2011 Census, the population was about 441,894 people. The city remains a place where ancient history and modern life meet. You can see this at the busy Mathura Junction railway station.
