The city is a very important place for many people to visit. In the first half of 2024, about 110 million people traveled there. This made it the top tourist spot in the whole state. It is the main center for the Ayodhya district and the Ayodhya division.

The city has many different names in history. Long ago, it was known as Saketa.

Some people say the name Ayodhya means "not to be fought." This means the city is invincible or cannot be conquered. Other stories say the name means it cannot be conquered by sins. The name Saketa might come from words meaning "with buildings" or "with banners." It was also known as Kosala or Oudh in the past.

Many religious leaders have visited this place. Early Buddhist and Jain books say Gautama Buddha and Mahavira lived here.

Jain texts also say five tirthankaras were born in this city. These leaders are named Rishabhanatha, Ajitanatha, Abhinandananatha, Sumatinatha, and Anantanatha. For Hindus, the city is very special because of the Ramayana. The epic says Ayodhya is the birthplace of the deity Rama. It is one of the seven most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus.

There was a long disagreement about a piece of land in the city. This land held the Babri mosque, which was built between 1528 and 1529. Some believed a Hindu temple stood there at the birth spot of Rama. In 1992, a mob destroyed the mosque, which caused riots across India. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India gave a final decision. They said the land belongs to the government. They ordered the land to go to a trust to build the Ram Mandir.

This new temple was finished in January 2024. The court also gave five acres of land to build a mosque.

Ayodhya has been a busy center for a very long time. It likely grew as a marketplace where two big roads met. One road went from Shravasti to Pratishthana. The other road went from Rajagriha to Taxila.

Archaeologists have found a large brick wall that was a fortification. This wall was likely built in the late third century BC. The city has seen many different rulers, like the Gupta and Kushan empires. Even today, it remains a huge place for travelers and pilgrims.
