People have used this river for a very long time. In the past, the river was a busy path for travel. Steamers used the lower part of the river to move goods. People carried things like timber, sugar, and cotton on cargo boats. This was very common during the months of April, May, and June.

However, things changed in the late 1800s. This was when railways began to appear. The trains were faster and safer than the boats. Because of this, the rivers were no longer the main way to move people and goods.

The river is also used to help people grow food. In India, there is a large irrigation project. It uses the water from the Ghaghara and the Sarda rivers. This project is one of the largest in all of Asia. It uses a system of canals to move water to many districts. This helps farmers water their crops in many different areas.

Even though the river is very useful, it can be tricky. During the monsoon season, heavy rain can cause the river to flood. This is a big change from the dry summer months.
