Maroon 5

Maroon 5 is a highly successful American pop rock band.

Based in Los Angeles, California, they are one of the best-selling music acts in history. The group has sold more than 135 million records worldwide. They have earned numerous prestigious accolades. These include three Grammy Awards and three American Music Awards. Their music blends various styles to reach a global audience.

The band's origins began in February 1994.

At that time, they were known as Kara's Flowers. The original members were Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick. They met while attending Brentwood School in Los Angeles. They even named the group after a girl at their high school. They released an independent album titled ...We Like Digging? in 1994. Later, they signed with Reprise Records for their debut, The Fourth World. However, the album received a tepid response. It sold only about 5,000 copies. Consequently, the record label dropped the band in 1997.

Between 2000 and 2001, the members attended college. Levine and Carmichael moved to the East Coast to attend Five Towns College in New York. During this time, they were influenced by urban music styles. This exposure changed the way they wrote songs. In 2001, the group re-emerged as Maroon 5. They added guitarist James Valentine to the lineup.

This addition allowed Levine to focus on being the frontman. They also signed with Octone Records after executives heard their demo. Specifically, executive Ben Berkman was impressed by the song "Sunday Morning."

The release of Songs About Jane in 2002 transformed their career. This album featured hit singles such as "Harder to Breathe," "This Love," and "She Will Be Loved." The album reached number six on the Billboard 200 chart. By 2005, the record had gone quadruple platinum. The band's success led them to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist that same year. They also toured extensively, visiting seventeen different countries. During this period, they performed alongside many famous acts, including the Rolling Stones.

As the band grew, the lineup underwent several changes.

In 2006, drummer Ryan Dusick left the group. He suffered from serious wrist and shoulder injuries caused by the strain of touring. Matt Flynn joined as the new drummer to replace him. In 2012, Jesse Carmichael took a temporary break. Keyboardist PJ Morton joined the band during this interval. Later, in 2014, Carmichael rejoined the group. In 2016, Sam Farrar became an official member of the lineup. In 2020, Mickey Madden departed the band following his arrest on domestic violence charges. Following this, Farrar took over as the official bassist.

Maroon 5 has maintained a strong presence on the music charts through many albums.

Their second album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long, debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. The single "Makes Me Wonder" also reached number one. Their third album, Hands All Over, produced the hit "Moves Like Jagger." In 2012, the single "One More Night" from their fourth album, Overexposed, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for nine consecutive weeks. Their fifth album, V, also reached number one on the Billboard 200. Their later works include the albums Jordi and Love Is Like.

The band's influence extends into the broader landscape of pop culture and music history.

They have performed at major global events, such as Live 8 in Philadelphia. They have also performed at special tributes, including an event for filmmaker George Lucas. Their ability to adapt their sound has allowed them to remain relevant across different eras. From their early days as high school students to becoming global superstars, they have demonstrated significant musical evolution. Their massive record sales place them among the most impactful artists in the modern music industry.
