In the early 1980s, Jon Bon Jovi recorded the song "Runaway" in his cousin's studio. He used local studio musicians to help create the track. To achieve even greater success, the band eventually changed their recording process. For their third album, they moved to Vancouver, Canada, for six months. They worked closely with producer Bruce Fairbairn and songwriter Desmond Child. This professional collaboration helped them refine their signature sound.

The band's lineup has seen several important changes over time. The core group includes singer Jon Bon Jovi and keyboardist David Bryan. They are joined by drummer Tico Torres, bassist Hugh McDonald, and percussionists like Everett Bradley. The guitar roles have also evolved. For a long time, Richie Sambora was the lead guitarist and a key songwriter. He left the band in 2013 to spend more time with his family. Currently, the guitar duties are handled by John Shanks and Phil X.

The history of the band began with Jon Bon Jovi's early performances. He started playing piano and guitar at age 13 in New Jersey. By 1983, he officially formed the band with David Bryan, Alec John Such, and Tico Torres. They signed with Mercury Records after catching the attention of executive Derek Shulman. A friend named Pamela Maher suggested the name "Bon Jovi." This name was chosen to follow the tradition of famous two-word bands. This identity helped them become a household name during the mid-1980s.

The band reached massive commercial heights during the late 1980s. Their 1986 album, Slippery When Wet, spent eight weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. It produced two number one singles: "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer." Their follow-up album, New Jersey, was also a huge success. It featured five Top 10 singles, including the number ones "Bad Medicine" and "I'll Be There for You." This era established them as global superstars capable of filling large arenas.

Bon Jovi has also shown an ability to explore different musical genres. In the mid-2000s, they incorporated elements of country music into their songs. Their 2006 single "Who Says You Can't Go Home" won a Grammy Award. This song was significant because it was the first single by a rock band to reach number one on the country charts. They also released the album 2020, which included songs inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd protests. This shows how the band connects their music to real-world events.

The scale of the band's impact is visible in their impressive statistics. They have released 16 studio albums and many live and compilation records. Worldwide, they have sold more than 130 million records. Their career includes 3,000 concerts performed in 50 different countries. These performances have reached a total audience of 34 million people. Their touring success is also notable, with several tours ranking among the top 20 highest-grossing of the 2000s. Because of these achievements, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
