Van Halen was a highly influential American rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. The group is credited with restoring hard rock to the forefront of the music industry. They were famous for their high-energy live performances and the technical skill of their musicians.

Most notably, guitarist Eddie Van Halen became a legend for his virtuosity. His unique playing styles changed how people thought about the electric guitar. The band's impact on rock music remains significant decades after their formation.

The band's core sound relied on a specific group of musicians and their chemistry. From 1974 to 1985, the lineup included Eddie Van Halen on guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals. He was the primary songwriter for the group. His older brother, Alex Van Halen, provided the percussion on drums. David Lee Roth served as the charismatic lead vocalist. Michael Anthony completed the classic lineup on bass guitar.

This combination of technical skill and stage presence defined their early success.

Van Halen's musical journey involved several distinct eras based on their lead singers. The first era featured David Lee Roth, which produced their self-titled debut in 1978. This era was characterized by a mix of hard rock and high-energy showmanship. When Roth left in 1985, Sammy Hagar joined as the new vocalist. The Hagar era saw the release of several number-one, multi-platinum albums like "5150" and "Balance."

Later, Gary Cherone joined briefly for the album "Van Halen III" in 1998. The final era saw the return of Roth alongside Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen, on bass.

The history of the band begins with the Van Halen brothers' childhood in the Netherlands. Their parents, Jan Van Halen and Eugenia Van Beers, were both musicians. The family moved to Pasadena, California, in 1962. The brothers began playing music together in the 1960s. Initially, Eddie played drums while Alex played guitar. However, through sibling competition, they eventually swapped roles.

They went through several names, including Genesis and Mammoth, before settling on Van Halen in 1973.

Van Halen achieved massive commercial success through record-breaking album sales. Their debut album reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 and eventually earned a Diamond certification. This means it sold over 10 million copies in the United States alone.

The 1984 album was also a massive hit, selling 10 million copies in the U.S. by 1999. Globally, the band has sold more than 80 million albums. This makes them one of the best-selling musical groups of all time. They are ranked 20th on the RIAA's list of best-selling artists in the United States.

Many specific musical details highlight the band's technical importance. Eddie Van Halen pioneered a technique called "finger-tapping." This involves using the fingers of both hands to tap the guitar strings. This skill was showcased in the famous solo "Eruption."

The band also experimented with different sounds, such as using an amplified Wurlitzer electric piano on the album "Women and Children First." Their ability to blend complex musicality with pop appeal helped them chart 13 number-one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Van Halen's legacy connects to the broader history of hard rock and technical music performance. VH1 ranked them seventh on its list of the "100 Greatest Hard Rock Artists." Their success demonstrated how technical virtuosity could coexist with massive commercial popularity. The band's evolution through different vocalists shows how rock groups adapt to changing musical tastes. Even after Eddie Van Halen's death from cancer in 2020, the band's influence persists.
