Pearl Jam is an influential American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990.

They were central figures in the grunge movement of the early 1990s. Many critics have called them the most popular American rock and roll band of that decade. The group is known for its longevity and massive commercial success. They have shaped the sound of modern rock through their unique style. Their influence continues to be felt in the music industry today.

The band's core lineup has remained remarkably stable since its inception. Stone Gossard and Mike McCready serve as the guitarists. Jeff Ament provides the bass, while Eddie Vedder acts as the vocalist and a guitarist.

In their early years, the group experienced a revolving cast of drummers. These included Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abbruzzese, and Jack Irons. Matt Cameron became their longest-tenured drummer, serving from 1998 until 2025. Keyboardist Boom Gaspar has also supported the band as a session and touring musician since 2002.

The band's formation grew from the dissolution of previous Seattle musical projects. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament previously played in the grunge band Green River. They later formed Mother Love Bone, which signed to PolyGram in 1988. However, the death of vocalist Andrew Wood in 1990 led to the end of that group. Gossard began writing harder-edged music and practiced with guitarist Mike McCready. The trio eventually produced a five-song demo tape to find new members.

Jack Irons passed this tape to his friend, Eddie Vedder, who recorded vocals and sent them back to Seattle. Vedder joined the band within a week of his audition.

Originally, the group performed under the name Mookie Blaylock, named after a basketball player. They later changed their name to Pearl Jam after signing with Epic Records.

While Vedder once suggested the name referred to a family recipe, the band later clarified its origin. Ament suggested the "Pearl" part, and the "Jam" part came from watching Neil Young perform long improvisational songs. Their first official show took place at the Off Ramp Café in Seattle on October 22, 1990. They quickly moved from local clubs to major tours.

Pearl Jam's debut album, Ten, was released in 1991 and became a massive commercial breakthrough. The album featured 11 tracks that explored dark, complex themes like depression and loneliness. It stayed on the US Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) eventually certified the album 13× platinum. Their second album, Vs., released in 1993, set a record for most copies sold in a single week. It sold over 950,000 copies during its first week of release. Their third album, Vitalogy, also saw rapid success, selling over 877,000 units in its first week.

The band's massive popularity led to a complicated relationship with the music industry. Pearl Jam often shunned standard practices, such as making music videos or participating in interviews. Vedder believed that music videos robbed listeners of their ability to use self-expression and imagination. In 1994, the band unsuccessfully sued Ticketmaster to challenge its monopoly on the concert-ticket market. They were also known for their intense and powerful live performances.

This reputation earned them a high ranking in Rolling Stone's "Top Ten Live Acts of All Time" poll.

By 2012, Pearl Jam had sold nearly 32 million albums in the United States alone. Their total worldwide sales exceeded 85 million albums, making them one of the best-selling bands ever.

This success did not distract them from social and political engagement. Vedder often acted as a spokesman for the band on various issues. They have promoted various causes, including abortion rights and opposition to the presidency of George W. Bush. In 2017, their contributions to music were recognized when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
