Adams' journey to stardom involved significant personal struggle and hard work. Born on November 5, 1959, in Kingston, Ontario, he grew up in a diplomatic family. His father was a British Army officer and a United Nations peacekeeping observer. This lifestyle meant Adams lived in various countries, including Israel, Japan, and South Korea. During his youth, Adams faced difficult challenges with drug and alcohol abuse. He has noted that these struggles left physical pockmarks on his face. However, a pivotal moment occurred when he realized the pain his actions caused his mother. This realization helped him change his path toward a professional music career.

His musical foundation was built through early experimentation and unlikely jobs. He bought his first electric guitar at age 10. To fund his musical interests, he worked as a dishwasher and sold pet food. He joined the glam rock band Sweeney Todd at age 15. A major turning point occurred in 1978 when he met songwriter Jim Vallance. They met at a Long and McQuade musical instrument store in Vancouver. This meeting began a prolific songwriting partnership that lasted through the 1980s. Together, they co-wrote songs not only for Adams but also for artists like Kiss and Tina Turner.

Adams achieved mainstream success through a series of highly successful albums. His 1983 album, *Cuts Like a Knife*, served as his breakout work in North America. The title track and the ballad "Straight from the Heart" were major hits. Following this, his 1984 album *Reckless* made him a global superstar.

*Reckless* was a historic achievement, becoming the first album by a Canadian to be certified diamond in Canada. The album produced six charting singles, including "Run to You" and "Summer of '69." It also featured the power ballad "Heaven," which reached number one in the United States.

The 1990s saw Adams reach even greater heights with massive international singles. In 1991, he released "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You." This single was a phenomenon, reaching number one in at least 19 countries. In the UK, the song stayed at number one for 16 consecutive weeks. It remains one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 15 million copies sold. This track was part of the *Waking Up the Neighbours* album, which sold 16 million copies and earned a diamond certification in Canada. During this era, his music shifted toward successful ballads like "Please Forgive Me" and "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?"

Beyond his solo success, Adams has used his talent for humanitarian efforts. In 1985, he participated in a charity project called The Northern Lights. He wrote the lyrics and the music for the song "Tears Are Not Enough." This supergroup included other famous Canadian artists like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. The goal was to raise funds to help address the famine in Ethiopia during 1983-1985. The song reached number one on the Canadian Top 40 charts and provided significant aid through its success.

Adams' excellence has been recognized through numerous prestigious awards and honors. He has won 20 Juno Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. His songwriting has also earned him nominations for Golden Globes and Academy Awards.

Even his visual talents are celebrated, as seen by his receipt of a Lead Award for photography.
