Lavigne's musical development began in her childhood in Ontario. Her parents noticed her vocal abilities when she was two years old. To support her interest, her father converted their basement into a studio. He provided her with a microphone, a drum kit, a keyboard, and several guitars. As a teenager, she performed at country fairs. She sang songs by artists like Shania Twain and Garth Brooks. She also began writing her own original songs. During high school, she was an active ice hockey player. She served as a right winger in a boys' league. She earned the title of Most Valuable Player twice.

Her professional rise involved several important milestones. In 1999, she won a radio contest to perform with Shania Twain. This performance was for an audience of 20,000 people in Ottawa. Later, she contributed vocals to albums by folk singer Stephen Medd. In 1999, manager Cliff Fabri discovered her at a bookstore. He distributed VHS tapes of her home performances to industry professionals. This led to interest from executives at Nettwerk. Lavigne eventually traveled to New York to work with producer Peter Zizzo.
