Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette is a Canadian and American singer-songwriter and record producer.

She is famous for her emotive mezzo-soprano voice. A mezzo-soprano is a voice type with a medium range. Many people call her the "Queen of Alt-Rock Angst." This title refers to her ability to express deep, honest emotions. Her confessional songwriting style has made her a global phenomenon. She has sold more than 60 million records worldwide.

Morissette's career began in Canada during the early 1990s. She first released two dance-pop albums. The first was titled *Alanis* in 1991. She co-wrote every track on that album with producer Leslie Howe. Her second album, *Now Is the Time*, came out in 1992. This record featured more thoughtful lyrics and less glitzy production. It was considered a commercial failure because it sold half as much as her first album. Following this, she was dropped by her record label. This happened because her musical identity was shifting in a new direction.

To find a new sound, Morissette moved to Los Angeles.

She worked with manager Scott Welch to develop her songwriting. She eventually met producer Glen Ballard in California. Ballard supported her creative spirit instead of trying to mold her sound. Together, they wrote her first international album, *Jagged Little Pill*. This album was released in June 1995 through Maverick Records. It was expected to sell only enough to fund a follow-up. However, the album became one of the best-selling records of all time.

*Jagged Little Pill* reached massive success through specific hit singles. The first single, "You Oughta Know," featured Flea and Dave Navarro from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This song was written out of a sense of devastation. It expressed emotions like anger and sadness that women often feel. Other major hits included "Ironic," "Hand in My Pocket," and "You Learn." The album sold 33 million copies worldwide. In the United States alone, it sold more than 16 million copies. This success helped open doors for other female artists like Avril Lavigne and Pink.

Morissette has earned many prestigious musical accolades. For *Jagged Little Pill*, she won five Grammy Awards in 1996. This included the award for Album of the Year. At that time, she was the youngest winner in that category. She also won a Brit Award for International Breakthrough Act. In Canada, she has won fourteen Juno Awards.

In 2005, she was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Her career achievements include holding the record for the most number ones on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart among female soloists.

Her musical evolution continued through the late 1990s and 2000s. In 1998, she released *Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie*. This album featured an experimental sound. That same year, her song "Uninvited" won two Grammy Awards. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award. In 2002, she took on more creative control. She acted as the sole producer for her fifth album, *Under Rug Swept*. This work won her the Jack Richardson Producer of the Year Award.

Morissette has remained active with many albums released through 2022. These include *So-Called Chaos*, *Flavors of Entanglement*, and *The Storm Before the Calm*. Her music continues to reach the top of international charts. VH1 ranked her as the 53rd-greatest woman in rock and roll. Her journey shows how an artist can move from pop to alternative rock. She transformed her personal experiences into a shared global language. Her influence remains a vital part of modern music history.
