They are recognized for their ability to fuse diverse musical genres. Their early work blended heavy metal with hip hop elements. This style is often called nu metal. As they evolved, they incorporated more electronica and pop influences. Today, they are one of the best-selling music acts in history. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

The band's musical process involves layering many different sounds. They use traditional rock instruments like guitars, drums, and bass. They also utilize keyboards and a DJ to provide turntablism. This means the DJ uses records to create rhythmic sounds. In their album Meteora, they even included a shakuhachi. A shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese flute made of bamboo. By combining these different textures, they create a complex sonic landscape. Their 2024 album, From Zero, integrates elements from every previous era of their career.

The band's history began in 1996 in Agoura Hills, California.

Three high school friends founded the group. These members were Mike Shinoda, Rob Bourdon, and Brad Delson. They initially performed under the name Xero. They even recorded early tracks in a makeshift bedroom studio. In 1999, they recruited vocalist Chester Bennington. This addition created a powerful vocal chemistry with Shinoda. Following this, they changed their name to Linkin Park. This name was an homage to Lincoln Park in Santa Monica. They used the spelling "Linkin" to secure the internet domain linkinpark.com.

Linkin Park achieved massive commercial success with their debut album.

Hybrid Theory was released on October 24, 2000. It sold over 4.8 million copies in its first year alone. This success made it the best-selling album of 2001. The single "In the End" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The band also won a Grammy Award for the song "Crawling." Their second album, Meteora, followed in 2003. It debuted at number one on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart. It sold nearly three million copies by October of that year.

Throughout their career, the band has explored many different musical stages. Their third album, Minutes to Midnight, signaled a change in sound. In 2010, A Thousand Suns introduced more electronic layering. Living Things, released in 2012, combined these various styles. The sixth album, The Hunting Party, returned to a heavier rock sound. Their seventh album, One More Light, was more pop-oriented. This constant experimentation allowed them to remain relevant across different decades.

The band has received numerous prestigious industry honors. They have won two Grammy Awards and seven American Music Awards. They also hold four Billboard Music Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards. In 2003, MTV2 named them the sixth-greatest band of the music video era. Billboard ranked them as the number 19 artist of the decade. In 2012, a VH1 poll voted them the greatest artist of the 2000s.

These accolades reflect their massive impact on global culture.

The band faced significant changes and a long period of silence. Following the death of Chester Bennington in July 2017, the group entered a hiatus. This break lasted for seven years. During this time, drummer Rob Bourdon also left the band. However, Linkin Park announced a reformation in September 2024.
