Nu metal is a distinctive subgenre of alternative metal music.

It is defined by its fusion of heavy metal with diverse musical styles. These include hip-hop, funk, grunge, and industrial music. The genre is also sometimes called aggro-metal or simply aggro. It emerged as a key part of the new wave of American heavy metal. This movement changed how heavy metal sounded by emphasizing rhythm over technical complexity. Nu metal often uses a pop music structure. This includes a sequence of verses, choruses, bridges, and outros. This makes the music more accessible to a wider audience.

The music relies on a specific mechanical approach to instrumentation.

Guitarists often use seven-string guitars rather than traditional six-string models. They frequently down-tune these instruments to produce a much heavier, darker sound. Music journalists have described this tone as sounding like a Mack truck being crushed by a skyscraper. Instead of long, complex guitar solos, the genre focuses on heavy, muted riffs. These riffs are often heavily syncopated, meaning they use unexpected rhythmic patterns. Bassists and drummers are heavily influenced by funk and hip-hop rhythms. This creates a strong, groove-oriented foundation for the songs.

Nu metal features several distinct vocal and instrumental layers.

Vocalists employ a wide range of styles to convey emotion. These include traditional singing, rhythmic rapping, screaming, and growling. Some bands, such as Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, incorporate significant rapping. Others, like Staind and Godsmack, focus more on melodic singing. Many groups also feature DJs to provide additional texture. These DJs use techniques like sampling, turntable scratching, and electronic background music. This integration of electronic elements helps bridge the gap between rock and urban music.

The history of the genre traces back to the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Influential bands like Pantera, Helmet, and Faith No More laid the groundwork. Pantera provided groove metal influences, while Faith No More offered diverse vocal styles. The band Korn is widely credited with pioneering the subgenre in the mid-1990s. Their 1993 demo, Neidermayer's Mind, and their 1994 self-titled debut album are considered foundational. Producer Ross Robinson is often called the "Godfather of Nu Metal" for his work with early groups. While many early bands originated in California, the sound spread to states like Iowa, Florida, and Massachusetts.

Nu metal reached massive commercial significance during its peak years.

In the late 1990s, bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot sold millions of copies of their albums. The genre's popularity peaked in 2001 with Linkin Park. Their debut album, Hybrid Theory, became a diamond-selling record. This level of success demonstrated the genre's massive reach. However, by the mid-2000s, the genre began to decline. This was caused by an oversaturation of bands and the underperformance of several high-profile releases. Many artists eventually disbanded or transitioned into different musical styles.

Lyrical themes in nu metal are often intense and direct.

Many songs explore personal angst, pain, bullying, and alienation. These themes are similar to those found in the grunge movement. Some lyrics are described as nihilistic or angry, while others explore different topics. For example, the band P.O.D. writes about hope and promise. The band Drowning Pool wrote "Bodies," a song about moshing. Some bands, like Deftones, are noted for using more complex allusions in their lyrics. This allows for many different interpretations of their songs.

Nu metal also created a recognizable visual culture through fashion.

Clothing often includes baggy items like JNCO jeans, oversized hoodies, and sports jerseys. Hairstyles can include dreadlocks, braids, or dyed hair. Accessories like wallet chains, tattoos, and facial piercings are also common. Some bands, such as Slipknot and Mushroomhead, use masks or face paint as part of their performance. In the 2010s and 2020s, the genre experienced a revival. Modern artists like Grimes and Poppy have integrated nu-metal sounds into electronic pop. Other bands have combined the style with metalcore or deathcore to create new sounds.
