This genre is defined by unique guitar riffs and specific rhythmic patterns. The band's current lineup consists of vocalist Jonathan Davis. He is joined by guitarists James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch. Ray Luzier serves as the drummer, having replaced David Silveria in 2007. Through their distinct sound, Korn has achieved massive global success. As of 2021, the group had sold more than 40 million records worldwide.

The band's origins trace back to a group called L.A.P.D. Three original members were James Shaffer, Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu, and David Silveria. They released an album titled Who's Laughing Now in 1991. After lead singer Richard Morrill left, the remaining trio briefly used the name Creep. They eventually recruited Brian Welch and Jonathan Davis to form Korn in 1993. To create their identity, they chose a unique name spelling. They used a "K" instead of a "C" and a backwards "R."

This logo design was inspired by the Toys R Us logo. Several members had previously worked for that toy retailer.

Korn's path to fame involved careful preparation and early recordings. In 1993, they produced a demo tape titled Neidermayer's Mind. This tape was distributed for free to record companies and the public. While recording at Underground Chicken Sound in Huntington Beach, they attracted large crowds. People gathered to hear a prelude to their song "Clown." This sound was described by an Immortal Records employee as a new genre of rock. Their self-titled debut album was released in October 1994. It peaked at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart. This album helped establish a new wave of metal music.

The band experienced rapid growth through their mid-1990s releases. Their second album, Life Is Peachy, arrived in October 1996. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. The album also reached number one in New Zealand. During this era, the band played between 200 and 250 shows. They toured with various acts, including the band Deftones.

Their music began earning professional recognition through awards and nominations. The song "Shoots and Ladders" received a Grammy nomination in 1997. Their debut album eventually earned a double-platinum certification from the RIAA.

By the late 1990s, Korn reached mainstream dominance. Their 1998 album, Follow the Leader, was a massive commercial success. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album sold at least 268,000 copies in its first week alone. This era produced famous singles like "Got the Life" and "Freak on a Leash." These music videos became staples on MTV's Total Request Live. In fact, "Got the Life" was the very first video to be "retired" from the show. This retirement happened because the video had reached a high threshold of popularity.

Their chart presence is statistically significant. Fourteen of their official releases have reached the top ten of the Billboard 200. Eight of those releases actually peaked within the top five. This consistency shows their lasting impact on the music industry.

Beyond music, Korn was an early adopter of digital fan engagement. They produced a weekly online show called KornTV. This project documented the recording process for their fans. They even allowed fans, nicknamed "nibletz," to call in with questions. This was one of the first times a major band utilized the internet this way.
