The Manicouagan Reservoir is a very special lake in Quebec, Canada.

It sits in the Côte-Nord region near the city of Baie-Comeau. This lake is shaped like a giant ring. In the middle of the ring sits a large island. This is René-Levasseur Island. The highest point on this island is Mount Babel. Some people call this place the "eye of Quebec." This is because it looks like a giant eye when seen from space.

This ring shape comes from a very old event. A huge asteroid hit the Earth a long time ago. This hit happened about 214 million years ago. The asteroid was about 10 kilometers wide. It made a massive hole in the ground called a crater. The crater was once even wider than it is now. Over millions of years, wind and water changed its shape. Today, it is the sixth-largest impact structure on Earth.

Scientists use special tools to study this ancient site. They use a method called radiometric dating to find its age. This helps them know exactly when the impact happened. The impact sent pieces of rock far away. These pieces have been found in England and Japan. Some experts think the hit might have affected life in the ocean. It may have caused some sea creatures to decline. However, scientists are still looking for more direct proof of this.

The lake we see today is not the same as the old crater. In the 1960s, people built the Daniel-Johnson dam. This was part of a big project by Hydro-Québec. The dam flooded two older lakes to create this large reservoir. Now, the water acts like a giant tank for power. It feeds several stations like Manic-2 and Manic-3. The water flows through these stations to make electricity. This helps provide power for many homes and cities.

The water level in the lake actually changes with the seasons. In the cold winter, the water level often goes down. This happens because people need much more electricity for heat. In the summer, the level might change for another reason. During hot times, the power is sent to the United States. This helps the electrical grid in New England. It is amazing how an ancient space rock helps power our modern lives.
