The Siberian Traps are a huge region of volcanic rock in Russia.

This area is known as a large igneous province. It was formed by a flood basalt event. During this event, huge amounts of lava covered much of Siberia. This massive volcanic event is one of the largest ever known. The rocks here are mostly basalt. Some other types of rocks called mafic and felsic are also present. These different rocks show that many eruptions happened over a long time.

Scientists believe a mantle plume caused these eruptions. A mantle plume is a hot part of the Earth's deep interior. It rose up until it reached the bottom of the Earth's crust. This plume then produced eruptions through the Siberian Craton. Some think the movement of Earth's plates over this plume caused the activity. The plume might have also created the Viluy Traps to the east. It may have even caused volcanic activity in the Arctic Ocean later on. The eruptions lasted for roughly two million years.

These eruptions changed the world in very big ways. They happened around the Permian–Triassic boundary. This was about 251.9 million years ago. The eruptions released many gases into the air. These included carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. They also released halogens and metals. These gases led to global warming and acid rain. The oceans also changed through acidification and a lack of oxygen. These changes caused the Permian–Triassic extinction event. This was the most severe extinction in the history of life on Earth.

Geologists use special tools to find out exactly when this happened. They look at tiny crystals called zircon found in the volcanic rocks. Scientists use a method called CA-TIMS to date these zircons. This technique helps them find the age of the uranium inside. It removes errors caused by lead moving over time. They also use the argon-argon method on other rocks. They look at minerals like feldspar and biotite to check the dates. Most of the samples show the eruptions happened around 250 million years ago.

The name "trap" comes from a Swedish word, trappa, which means stairs. This is because the hills in the region look like steps.

Today, these rocks are very useful for finding metals. There is a large deposit of nickel, copper, and palladium in the area. This formed within the pathways where the magma once flowed. Scientists found these metals by looking at rock layers from after the extinction. This helps them connect the volcanic activity to the changes in life. The Siberian Traps remain a key part of Earth's history.
