This lake is shaped like a ring. It sits inside a giant crater. A long time ago, an asteroid hit the Earth. This hit happened about 214 million years ago. The hit made a huge hole in the ground. Over time, the hole filled with water. From space, the lake looks like a giant eye. Some people call it the "eye of Quebec."

A large island sits in the middle of the ring. We call this René-Levasseur Island. The highest point on the island is Mount Babel.

People use the water to make power. In the 1960s, workers built the Daniel-Johnson dam. This dam helps make electricity for many homes. The lake acts like a big tank for the water. This water flows through stations to make power. In the cold winter, the water level may go down. This is because people need more power for heat. In the summer, the lake level may also change. This is when the power is sent to other places.
