This basin is the remains of a giant impact crater. A large object from space hit Earth 1.849 billion years ago. This object may have been a comet or an asteroid. The hit was so powerful that it scattered rock fragments very far away. Some pieces were found as far as Minnesota.

The impact melted a lot of the Earth's crust. This created a thick layer of magma, which is melted rock. This magma acted like oil and water. The heavy parts sank to the bottom of the crater.

As the liquid cooled, it left behind many metals. The basin is a major source of nickel and copper. It also has gold, silver, and platinum.
