A long time ago, the Earth changed in a big way. This happened during a time called the Archean Eon. During this time, giant pieces of land collided. This event is called the Algoman orogeny.

One large piece was the Superior province. It hit the Minnesota River Valley terrane. A terrane is a large block of the Earth's crust. This crash was very powerful. It folded the crust and made huge mountains. These mountains were many kilometers high.

The crash also made a lot of heat and pressure. This heat caused metamorphism. Metamorphism is when heat and pressure change rocks into new kinds. This process made greenstone belts. These belts are made of rocks that look green. The green color comes from special minerals.

Many faults also formed. A fault is a crack where rocks move. Some rocks moved up or down by thousands of meters. Other rocks moved sideways for many kilometers. This mountain-building lasted about 50 to 100 million years. It helped finish the formation of the Earth's crust.
