In ancient China, leaders used a special idea to show they had the right to rule. This idea was called the Mandate of Heaven.

People believed that a divine force called Heaven chose the leader. This ruler was known as the Son of Heaven. He was the supreme monarch over everything under heaven. His job was to rule the world with virtue. Virtue means being good, fair, and able. If a ruler was just, he kept the Mandate.

How did people know if a ruler was still chosen by Heaven? They looked for signs in the world around them. Natural disasters like floods or famines were very important signs. Many people believed these events were signs of Heaven's displeasure. If a ruler was bad, Heaven would withdraw its support. This meant the ruler or his dynasty was no longer worthy. This belief even gave people the right to rebel against an unjust leader.

This idea started with the Zhou dynasty. The Zhou used it to explain why they took power from the Shang dynasty. The Shang had ruled for a long time with 31 kings. However, the Zhou believed the Shang had become morally corrupt. They said the Xia dynasty had lost its mandate to the Shang first. This created a pattern of one group passing power to the next. The Zhou even used celestial events to show approval. In 1059 BCE, they saw unusual planet clusters and Halley's Comet.

The Mandate of Heaven did not require a king to be born into a noble family. Some famous dynasties, like the Han and Ming, were started by men from common backgrounds.

For example, Liu Bang started the Han dynasty after the Qin fell. Because he was not from the aristocracy, stories were told about his magical birth. This helped show he had the divine right to lead. Even the Qing dynasty used this idea to support their rule. It was a way to make new leaders seem legitimate to the people.

Philosophers and scholars used this doctrine to help keep rulers in check. It was a way to limit the abuse of power in a system with few other rules.

Even when dynasties became weak, the prestige of the title remained. During the Eastern Zhou, the king lost real power but was still seen as Heaven's eldest son. Later, scholars like Xue Juzheng worked hard to show how the Mandate passed through different eras. They wanted to prove that the Song dynasty was the rightful successor. This idea helped connect the history of many different groups and times.
