In ancient China, people held a big idea. They called it the Mandate of Heaven. This idea helped explain who should rule.

Many believed that Heaven chose the ruler. This ruler was called the Son of Heaven. He was meant to be a kind leader. He had to rule with virtue. Virtue means being good and fair. If a ruler was good, he kept the Mandate.

But the Mandate could be lost. If a king was bad, Heaven would take it away. People saw signs of this in nature. Floods or famines were seen as bad signs. These disasters showed that Heaven was unhappy. This often led to people fighting to change the leader.

A ruler did not need to be born into a rich family. Some leaders came from common backgrounds. They were seen as rightful because they ruled well. This idea helped scholars check the power of kings. It was a way to ask for fair rule. The Mandate helped new families take power. It showed they had the right to lead.
