Some mammoths lived in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. The most famous kind is the woolly mammoth.

Woolly mammoths lived in very cold places. They had thick fur to stay warm. They also had a thick layer of fat under their skin. This fat helped them live in freezing weather. They even had small ears and tails. This helped them not lose too much heat.

Mammoths had very special teeth. Their tusks were long and twisted in a spiral. Some tusks were over 4 meters long.

Their teeth, called molars, had many ridges. These ridges are called lamellae. As mammoths changed over time, they grew more ridges. This helped them eat tough grass.
