To stay warm, it had thick fur. This fur had long guard hairs on the outside. It also had a short undercoat. Its ears and tail were very short. This helped it keep heat inside its body.

These animals were similar to modern elephants. They used their trunks and long tusks to find food. They mostly ate grasses and forbs. A mammoth could live to be 60 years old. Early humans lived near them. Humans used mammoth bones and tusks to make tools and homes.

Scientists have learned a lot about them. They found frozen bodies in Siberia and North America. They also found teeth and skeletons. By studying DNA, we know their closest living relative is the Asian elephant. Some small groups of mammoths lived on islands for a long time. The very last ones lived on Wrangel Island. They stayed there until about 4,000 years ago.
