Early mammoth species had molars with very few enamel ridges, known as lamellar plates. As they evolved to eat more abrasive vegetation, the number of ridges increased. For example, the southern mammoth had 12 to 14 ridges. The steppe mammoth, which appeared about 1 million years ago, had 18 to 20 ridges. Finally, the woolly mammoth evolved molars with 26 ridges.

This dental evolution went hand-in-hand with changes to their skulls. Skulls became taller to hold the larger teeth. They also became shorter from front to back to reduce the weight of the head.

Sloane recognized they were elephant-like but suggested they were moved by a Great Flood. In 1796, the French biologist Georges Cuvier made a major discovery. He identified the remains as a completely new species. He was also the first to argue that the species had gone extinct. This was a controversial idea at the time. In 1799, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach gave them the scientific name Elephas primigenius. This name translates to "the first-born elephant."

Scientists have gathered immense detail about mammoths through various physical remains. They have studied frozen carcasses found in the permafrost of Siberia and North America. These finds include skeletons, teeth, stomach contents, and even dung. Researchers have also analyzed prehistoric cave paintings that depict them.

We know their approximate size by comparing them to modern elephants. A male could reach a shoulder height of 4.3 meters and weigh up to 6 tons. Females were slightly smaller, reaching 3.4 meters and weighing up to 4 tons. Even newborn calves were large, weighing about 100 kilograms. Most individuals likely lived to be around 60 years old.

Research shows that the mammoth and Asian elephant lineages diverged between 5.8 and 7.8 million years ago. While they are different, they are still very similar. For instance, the woolly mammoth and the African elephant share between 98.55% and 99.40% of their DNA. In 2015, the completion of the mammoth genome project even started discussions about reviving the species. However, scientists say that reviving the mammoth is not currently feasible.
