Later, researchers like Franz Weidenreich noticed they were similar to fossils found in China. These fossils are known as Peking Man. Over time, scientists realized these different groups were all part of the Homo erectus species.

There are many specific facts about how they looked and lived. Their skulls usually had a thick ridge of bone above the eyes. They also had protruding jaws and large teeth. Their bones were much thicker than our bones are today.

Adult heights ranged from about 3 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches. Their weights were also quite different from ours. Some groups in East Asia had even larger brains than others. The very last group of Homo erectus lived in Southeast Asia until about 108,000 to 117,000 years ago.

Understanding Homo erectus helps us see how humans changed over time. They were the first to use fire in their daily lives.

Scientists have used different names to describe various groups of Homo erectus. Some researchers recognize several subspecies to show where and when they lived. These include H. e. erectus from Indonesia and H. e. pekinensis from China. Other groups include H. e. soloensis, H. e. ergaster, H. e. georgicus, and H. e. tautavelensis.

While these names help organize fossils, many scientists view these differences as clines. A cline is a gradual change in physical traits across a geographic area. This means they were likely one large, connected species rather than totally separate groups.

The discovery of Homo erectus changed how we understand human history. In 1893, Eugène Dubois described the species using fossils from Java, Indonesia.

This led to a debate about where humans began. Some believed in polycentrism, the idea that humans evolved in different places. However, the "Out of Africa" theory and monogenism became the scientific consensus. This theory states that all modern humans share a single common ancestor from Africa.

Physically, Homo erectus looked quite different from modern humans. Their skulls typically featured a pronounced brow ridge, known as a supraorbital torus. They also had protruding jaws and large teeth. Their bones were much thicker and more robust than ours. Reconstructed adult heights ranged from about 3 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches. Their brain volumes also varied by region. East Asian populations often had larger brain volumes than Western populations. Some groups, like H. e. georgicus, had brain volumes that were quite low.

Homo erectus was also a very skilled survivor. They invented the Acheulean tool industry, which focused on large, heavy-duty stone tools.

This specific population, H. e. soloensis, likely disappeared when the savannas turned into thick tropical jungles. This change in the environment removed the habitats they relied on. By studying these fossils, we can trace the long, complex path that led to the arrival of modern humans.
