While no intact braincase has been found, brain volume was likely within the range of modern humans. Their stature and build are also interesting. They may have been broad-chested and heavy like Neanderthals. However, their long limbs suggest traits seen in tropical populations. Their feet and thin kneecaps indicate they walked differently than we do.

Discovery began in the Sierra de Atapuerca in northern Spain.

In 1976, Trinidad Torres investigated the site for bear fossils. He found archaic human remains instead. This discovery sparked a massive exploration of the region. Scientists like José María Bermúdez de Castro, Eudald Carbonell, and Juan Luis Arsuaga led the work. They restarted excavations in 1992 and described the species in 1997.

Many specimens have been recovered from the Gran Dolina site.

About 170 specimens have been found so far. The most important piece is the holotype, specimen ATD6-5. This is a right jaw fragment containing molars. Most fossils come from a layer called TD6. Within this layer, researchers found human remains in several specific sections. One section is nicknamed the "Aurora Stratum" after Aurora Martín Nájera.

Originally, they were thought to be the last common ancestor of modern humans and Neanderthals. This would have replaced Homo heidelbergensis in that role. However, newer research suggests they might be an offshoot of the modern human line. Some scientists think they branched off just before the human and Neanderthal split. Others, like Richard Klein, suggest they were an offshoot of Homo ergaster that failed to colonize Europe. In 2020, protein analysis of a tooth suggested they were not direct modern human ancestors.

Climate played a huge role in where they lived.

They likely inhabited inland Iberia only during warm periods. During these times, the environment was a warm, humid savannah. When the climate cooled, they presumably retreated to the coast. This pattern of occupation happened in waves. The fossils in the Gran Dolina show they were active near the cave. Some bones may have been washed into the cave by water or debris flows. This helps scientists understand how they interacted with their changing world.
