Other fossils found included several femora, or thigh bones. These included KNM-ER 1472, KNM-ER 1475, and KNM-ER 1481. These discoveries challenged the existing models of human evolution. They suggested that the genus Homo might have appeared much earlier than previously thought.
Specific measurements help scientists compare these ancient humans to others. The KNM-ER 1470 skull had a brain volume of about 775 cubic centimeters. 

Different fossils provide surprising details about this species. The jawbone KNM-ER 1802 shows a U-shaped tooth row. In contrast, other specimens like KNM-ER 1470 show rectangular tooth rows. This variation might mean they were different species or just different individuals. 
The study of Homo rudolfensis connects to the larger story of human origins. It sits at the base of the human family tree. Most scientists agree that Homo evolved from Australopithecus. However, the exact timing of this split is still being debated.
