She found the specimen poking out of the ground at Olduvai Gorge. Louis Leakey described the find a month later and nicknamed it "Dear Boy." In 1965, geologists used potassium–argon dating to date the skull to 1.75 million years ago. This method measured anortoclase crystals in volcanic ash. It was an unprecedented use of geochronology at that time.

Significant data from fossils helps scientists understand the biology of these hominins. Sexual dimorphism, or the difference in size between males and females, is evident in some skulls. Some skulls are markedly smaller than others, suggesting females were much smaller than males.

The OH 80 specimen is believed to be a male and may have been quite large. The species inhabited wet, wooded environments. They coexisted with other hominins like Homo habilis and Homo erectus. They also lived alongside large predators, including big cats, crocodiles, and hyenas.
