He chose the name Paranthropus, which means "beside man" in Ancient Greek.

We know many specific details about their lives. Their brains were smaller than ours. One specimen had a brain volume of 476 cc. Another specimen named DNH 155 had a volume of 450 cc. A major part of this mechanism involved their inflated cheek teeth. These large molars and premolars allowed them to process tough foods. This specialized anatomy suggests they relied on a diet of C4 savanna plants. They may have also eaten fruits, honey, termites, and underground storage organs like tubers.

Scientists have noted significant differences between the males and females of the species. This variation is known as sexual dimorphism. In P. robustus, males were substantially larger and more robust than females. Based on three specific specimens, males were tall while females were smaller.

Data from four specimens also shows differences in their average weights. Their brain sizes were also smaller than those of contemporary Homo species. One specimen, SK 1585, had an estimated brain volume of 476 cc. Another specimen, DNH 155, measured about 450 cc. For comparison, the Homo genus at that time ranged from 500 to 900 cc.

The discovery of P. robustus began with a local schoolboy in 1938. Gert Terblanche found the first partial skull, known as TM 1517, at the Kromdraai cave site. He gave the remains to Charles Sydney Barlow. Barlow then passed them to the palaeontologist Robert Broom. Broom investigated the site and found several other bones. These included a humerus, an ulna, and a big toe bone. Broom officially named the species Paranthropus robustus in August 1938. The name comes from Ancient Greek and means "beside man."

The classification of this species has been a subject of long debate. Some researchers argue that Paranthropus is an invalid genus. They believe it should be grouped with Australopithecus as Australopithecus robustus. This debate involves whether the group is monophyletic, meaning they share a single common ancestor. Others suggest the group is paraphyletic, meaning they evolved similar traits independently.

While P. robustus is unique to South Africa, other robust species like P. boisei lived in East Africa. This shows that different robust lineages existed at the same time.

Life for P. robustus was physically demanding and dangerous. They lived in mixed environments that were part wooded and part open savanna.

They had to contend with large predators like hyenas, leopards, and sabertooth cats. Evidence of this danger exists in the fossil record. Some bones, such as the SK 54 skullcap, show holes that may have been caused by leopard attacks. It is even thought that many bones accumulated in caves due to predation by these large cats.

Ultimately, P. robustus went extinct during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. This period was characterized by a change in the Earth's climate. Dry cycles became more frequent and lasted longer. This caused their preferred wooded habitats to retreat. As the landscape changed, the specialized traits that once helped them survive may have become a disadvantage. Their disappearance marks a significant shift in the evolutionary history of the African landscape.
