The history of discovering A. afarensis is filled with major expeditions. In the 1930s, the first fossils were recovered from East Africa. In 1972, the International Afar Research Expedition began in Ethiopia. This team included Maurice Taieb, Donald Johanson, and Yves Coppens. They found hundreds of specimens in the Hadar region. On November 24, 1974, Johanson and Tom Gray found the famous "Lucy" skeleton. They named her after the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." 
Different fossils provide different views of the species' size. Lucy was a small individual, standing perhaps 3 feet 7 inches tall. In contrast, a presumed male was estimated to be much larger. This suggests significant sexual dimorphism, or physical differences between males and females. Scientists also found the "First Family" at site AL 333. This group included 216 specimens from 13 different individuals. Another important find was the DIK-1-1 infant skeleton at Dikika.
Taxonomy, or the science of naming species, remains a subject of debate. In 1978, scientists first described A. afarensis as a single species. Some researchers argued to split the fossils into different species. They believed the variation was too wide for one group. Other scientists proposed new names like "Praeanthropus" or "Homo hadar." Recent discoveries, like A. deyiremeda, have added to this complexity. The exact relationship between A. afarensis and the genus Homo is still being studied by experts today.
