Because of their size and habits, they shape the habitats where they live.

Evolutionary changes helped elephants survive. Earlier ancestors had different tooth shapes, but modern elephantids developed parallel lophs.

These ridges allowed them to be more efficient at eating grass. Many extinct relatives once lived alongside them, such as mammoths and mastodons.
