Malacca grew because it was a very busy port. Many different people traveled there to trade goods. Traders from China, India, and Arabia all came to visit. To keep things fair, the leaders made special maritime laws. They also picked four officials called Shahbandars to help different groups of traders. The city used tin and sago palms to help its economy grow. The Orang Laut people helped by patrolling the sea to stop pirates.

History says the kingdom began around the year 1400. A leader named Parameswara founded the city. He was once a king in a place called Singapura. After his old home was attacked, he fled to a small village. Legend says he saw a tiny mouse deer beat a hunting dog. He thought this was a great sign for a new kingdom. He named the place after a Melaka tree he sat under.

China played a big role in making Malacca strong. In 1405, an envoy from the Ming dynasty visited the city. Later, the famous Admiral Zheng He visited Malacca several times. These visits helped Malacca get protection from its neighbors. The king even traveled to China with the Admiral in 1411. During the reign of Sultan Muhammad Shah, the city became a center for Islam. He used the Jawi script for writing and learning.

Even though the sultanate fell in 1511, its story did not end. The Portuguese Empire attacked the capital that year. The last Sultan, Mahmud Shah, had to retreat to the south. His family went on to start new kingdoms in Johor and Perak. The ideas from Malacca stayed important for hundreds of years. People still look to Malacca as a great example of Malay-Muslim civilization. Its way of ruling helped shape the world we know today.
