Main course

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A main course is the star of a meal. It is the primary dish in a meal with many parts. These parts are called courses. The main course is the featured dish. It is often the most important part of eating together. People serve it to show its importance.

How people serve food changes in different lands. This is called cross-cultural variety. In the United States and Canada, people use a special name. They often call the main course an "entrée." However, this is not the same in France. In modern France, an entrée is a small dish. It is served before the main course starts.

We can look at history to see why names change. A linguist named Dan Jurafsky studied this. He says the North American name has an old root. It comes from the original French meaning. Back then, it meant the first of many meat courses. This explains why the name moved across the sea.

We can find the first written use of this word in an old book. The book is called "Petit traicté." A man named Pierre Sargent wrote it in Paris. He published it between the years 1534 and 1536. In this book, the term was "entrée de table." This meant the very first course of a whole meal.

Learning about food terms helps us understand the world. It shows how words move from one place to another. A word in one country can mean something else in another. This happens because of how people live and eat. Understanding these names makes dining more interesting. It connects us to people from long ago.
